In 1980 Wong Wai Kuan joined the Zhanjiang Cantonese-opera School and was trained by several well-known artistes including Yang Jing Bo.

After his graduation in 1984, he joined the Zhanjiang Cantonese-opera Troupe as one of the leading male artistes.

Although he bagged several awards for his performances, he seized every opportunity to upgrade his skills. Among his teachers were well-known Peking opera veterans and Cantonese-opera artiste Lin Jia Sheng.

In 1994 he joined the Foshan Cantonese-opera Troupe as the leading male artiste.

In 2002 he joined the Shenzhen Cantonese -opera Troupe as the leading male artiste.
